Childhood Blindness

Childhood blindness is defined as corrected visual acuity in the better eye, worse than 3/60 in a person younger than 16 years. This means that even with spectacles, the child would not be able to see the largest letter on a visual acuity chart if it is placed at 3 meters distance.

Severity of the Problem

1.5 million blind children world wide

Approximately 500,000 blind/ year – one every minute

About half of them die within one or two years of becoming blind

Children have more blind person years than adults

Globally, about 70 million blind person years are caused by childhood blindness

Approximately 1/3 rd of the total economic cost of blindness is thought to be due to childhood blindness

About 1% children have refractive errors. Spectacles can improve the vision of 95% to normal limits.
